Vision

The Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies (CIS) envisions uniting academic and research in Earth, Planetary, and Environmental Sciences from human resources available in various Schools of Goa University.

Mission

The mission of CIS is to advance collaborative research across the various sciences and humanities, to address complex challenges at the interface of science, technology, and society. This Centre will act as a hub to promote the use of space-based observations and modelling towards disaster preparedness, environmental monitoring, and policy formulation, while nurturing skilled human resources through interdisciplinary education and global partnerships.

Objective(s)

  • Promote interdisciplinary research in Earth System Science and Planetary studies.
  • Develop and promote space- and data-driven solutions for disaster risk reduction and climate resilience.
  • Translate scientific knowledge through NEP-aligned education, training, and skill development to provide actionable insights for policy and decision-making.
  • Harnessing space-based technologies, AI-driven analytics and bioprospecting of coastal and marine organism to promote sustainable resource management, climate resilience and innovation in blue economy.
  • Strengthen regional and national capacity for sustainable development through innovation and technology.
  • Foster collaboration across natural and applied sciences with humanities for societal impact.
  • Establish national, global and industry partnerships for joint research and technology transfer availing the facilities at Goa University Research Park Unit (GURU).

      • Earth and Planetary System Science
        • Advancing comparative studies of Earth processes through satellite analysis and geospatial analytics.
        • Plasma Physics, Magnetohydrodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Planetary Science, Space Science, Atmospheric Science, and Oceanography, Mathematics, Biology.
      • Disaster Risk Reduction and Data-Driven Solutions for Sustainability
        • Leveraging space-based observations, artificial intelligence, and big-data analytics for monitoring anthropogenic pressure on natural resources and multi-hazards to support evidence-based decision-making in climate resilience and sustainable development.
        • Implementing AI predictive models and adaptive strategies for managing natural and anthropogenic disaster.
        • Dissemination of knowledge to local communities about apps and schemes by NDMA/INCOIS/IIRS for disaster preparedness.
      • Environmental Monitoring, Bioprospecting and Resource Management
        • Integrating satellite, in-situ, model-based approaches for monitoring and conservation of coastal and marine ecosystems.
        • Bioprospecting of coastal and marine ecosystems for sustainable application and environmental governance.
